Our new-in bow ties are made in England from a beautifully rich Italian silk moiré which gives them body, a shimmy of movement and an irresistible depth of colour. Those who are not as proficient at tying a bow tie as they would like to be will be pleased to learn that they are not alone; certain of our customers ask us to tie their ties for them and then stitch the bow in place. Naturally, we are happy to oblige. And for those who prefer to go it alone, we recommend – as presented below – our pocket handkerchief and general accessories aficionado Adam Barr’s quick and trusty ‘on your leg’ method of producing the perfect knot. Please note that while tying a bow tie is actually rather easier than you might imagine, practise does make perfect.
Clip the tie together and and place under the thigh, gripping the left and right ends between the forefinger and thumb of your left and right hand.
‘Over and under’, as though you are tying your shoe laces.
Make a loop with the right end of the tie by folding it over and gripping the thin, central part between your thumb and forefinger so it is flush against your thigh. You will now see the beginnings of a bow.
Bring the left end of the tie tightly over and around the right end at the point where your right forefinger and thumb are gripping. Using your left forefinger, push it through the hole where your right thumb is so to form a bow. Don’t despair if you don’t get it right first time because this is the trickiest part.
Adjust by gently pulling here and there. And tighten by tugging on the ‘neck part’ around your thigh.
And there you go!
