We had decided to describe them on our website as 'bejewelingly plumed', but then, not sure if we could get away with bejewelingly, thought we'd better consult our friend the lexicographer Jesse Sheidlower, Editor at Large of the Oxford English Dictionary and author of The F-Word , a detailed history of the word fuck. 

"I'd pass on that myself," was what he said. Before quickly coming back with, "It does have a certain flow, one must confess." And then he asked to see a picture which, we presume, might persuade him to qualify bejewelingly as an officially recognised word. So here it is.

BLITZ appeared in the early eighties and documented the decade that saw the rise of the stylist and fashion making its way out of the clubs and into the mainstream. The birth of British fashion as it is now, really.

The Face and i-D were the other two style magazines of the time but they, in turn, were always a bit more interested in music and what was going on on the street. BLITZ kept its eye on the higher, more glamourous ground.

Iain R Webb was BLITZ's fashion editor from 1982-1987 and in his fascinating As Seen in BLITZ: Fashioning '80s Style (ACC EDITIONS) he has revisited and brought together over one hundred of his fashion features from the time and added previously-unseen archive content, original images and tear-sheets. Marvel at Comme Des Garcons, Jasper Conran, John Galliano, Jean Paul Gaultier, Katharine Hamnett (who first exhibited alongside in Richard in Paris in 1987, the year that he redefined the Savile Row suit) and more.

As Seen in BLITZ: Fashioning '80s Style

Spring, and a new pale green colour scheme for the Bespoke shop.

This is actually the first time we've changed the colour of the walls and carpet in the Bespoke shop since it opened in 2007.

As was the case with the pale lilac it has replaced, the natural thinking behind the green is that it won't steal the show,  just set things off.

That's a fine wool suit coat at the bottom of the stairs.

The bony finger of suspicion is immediately pointed at ci-devant cat burglar John Robie (Cary Grant) when a number of high-rolling tourists are cheekily liberated from their jewellery on the Cote D'Azur in Hitchcock's underrated To Catch A Thief (1955).

But retired Robie pleads innocence and sets out to catch the copycat crook by keeping his eye on the wealthier, better bejewelled visitors to the Riviera. One of these is demure Frances Stevens (Grace Kelly), who finds herself uncontrollably stimulated by the idea that the charming Mr Robie might just be a dashing ne'er do well jewel thief.

Cue a sheath-bursting romance with an undercurrent of Hitchcockian intrigue played out against a stunning VistaVision backdrop of the French Riviera. Robert Burks won the Academy Award for Colour Cinematography and Edith Head's wonderful wardrobe (above) perfectly captured the spirit and style of the times.
