Stephen Fry wears Richard James in Attitude

A svelte Stephen Fry takes tea in a Richard James navy twill suit, purple Panama gingham single cuff shirt and burgundy and orange polka dot tie for the new, November 2010 issue of Attitude. Tea drinking etiquette: small, ‘pinky’ finger raised as in the picture below, or kept in check, as above?

Koichi starts with the back section of his suit coat

More of Koichi Sugimoto, our apprentice cutter from Tokyo.

When we left him last month he was putting the finishing touches to the pattern for a jacket that he is making for himself. Now, he’s finished that pattern, has produced another for a pair of trousers and is using both of them to cut the cloth (a very nice 10oz, navy wool and cashmere herringbone) that, excitingly, is going to become his first Savile Row suit.

This cutting of the cloth is known in tailoring as striking. The next stage will involve Koichi making what is known as a plain baste (tacking each piece of his coat together with the canvases and shoulder pads that give a suit body and structure) in readiness for his first fitting.

And that is when we will next catch up with him.

Hew Locke's Artemis at Richard James Bespoke

Courtesy of the Hales Gallery, London E1,  Hew Locke’s vibrant wall relief Artemis has just gone on display in Richard James Bespoke. Created in early 2010, the work takes as its starting point a portrait of  Queen Elizabeth II, which the artist has deconstructed and then put back together again in his own way. Hew has turned his attention to the Royal Family before, and sees it as a vehicle through which he is able to confront and evaluate his experiences growing up in the former British colony of Guyana. Favoured materials include plastic lizards, sequins, fake machine gun parts and silk flowers. We are particularly fond of the small plastic skeleton, below.

See Hew’s proposal for a sculpture to fill the vacant fourth plinth in London’s Trafalgar Square in the crypt  of St Martins-in-the-Fields now.

Hand knitted from 100% cashmere in the west of Ireland

Hand knitted in the west of Ireland from 100% cashmere, these very snug hats hark back to a more innocent, outdoor age of wooden skis and Bovril on the terraces.  They come in three styles: the beanie (available as a plain knit or a contrasting marle); the ‘ski’ (longer and tapering at the back and sides to properly accommodate the nape of the neck and the ears), and the particularly popular cable knit bobble. For colours, see the picture above.

Merino wool star socks at Liberty

Richard James AW10 merino wool star socks in the window at Liberty, Regent Street, London W1. Worn with, er, heels and a nice, pleated, cream mid-length Felicity Brown dress. It’s a right liberty!

What a liberty!

Tom Hiddleston wears Richard James

Here’s Tom Hiddleston – who won an Olivier award in 2008 for his part in the London Barbican’s production of Cymbeline and who you might more readily recognise from the BBC’s supremely dour Wallander – in Richard James for the new, November issue of British GQ.

The suit is our AW10 single button Blue Dotty Stripe which is made from 100% super quality, award winning Lumb’s Goldenbale (more of which very soon), and with it Tom wears our Blue, Panama cotton gingham shirt and a large blue and white dogtooth tie.

Tom is now ridiculously sought after in Hollywood, with next year seeing him star in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse, Woody Allen’s Midnight In Paris and the Kenneth Branagh directed Thor. And then, closer to home, and by no means least, he is also playing the lead in Joanna Hogg’s much anticipated second feature, Archipelago.

More of the sheep on Savile Row: a nice short film from Woolmark of yesterday’s very successful and enjoyable Campaign for Wool sponsored Savile Row Field Day.  As the Campaign for Wool’s Vice President, Mr Nicholas Coleridge, said on the day: “All we are saying is give fleece a chance.”

We were listening to Seu Jorge and Almaz’s Girl You Move Me (from the simply titled new album, Seu  Jorge and Almaz), but then we discovered Cane and Abel’s brilliant 1971 original and there has been no going back. This astonishing performance is from the late Sacha Distel’s Sacha Show.
